I was asked to design and develop a website for Ceramic Knives Australia – a new company selling their own ceramic knife products online. A full eCommerce solution was required so they could sell their products globally. The website also needed to provide information about ceramic knives, not only a method of purchase.

Performance

They experienced immediate results with online sales. Their store is easy to manage (adding, editing products and prices). The website has become the center of their marketing and given them a strong brand to continue to develop.

1. Be sure to include as much real text on your website as possible – minimising the use of images as text. Keep in mind that Google and other search engines can not crawl images or Flash animations.

2. Write great content, loaded with relevant keywords and key phrases.

3. When creating backlinks, use descriptive words.

4. Having a link to your website on another website can sometimes be a faster way of Google seeing it than submitting it to Google themselves.

5. Try to focus on one keyword per page of content. Don’t overload the page with several keywords at once.

6. Create high quality backlinks using a relevant key phrase as the link. Backlinks are links on other people’s websites, pointing to your website.

7. Make sure you have a good title tag on every page of your website. Descriptive words work far better than company names. For example, Sydney Plumber instead of Joe’s Plumbing.

8. Think about converting your traffic to action. Having a million visitors is useless if there is no clear call to action.

9. Concentrate more on search phrases than on search keywords. For example “Melbourne website design” instead of just “websites”.

10. Always use image alt tags which help search engines to catalogue your images which can result in more hits.

11. Search engines value high quality content over high quantity content.

12. Include captions with as many images as possible.

13. Adding new content on a regular basis can help boost your search ranking.

14. File extensions do not affect SEO. You can use .html, .htm, .php or whatever else.

15. Learn social media. Good use of social media is invaluable to SEO.

I was asked to design a new brand for AllCooks – an online cookware retailer. The brand needed to be recognisable, simple and clean and work in a variety of media from web through to embossing on product. The colour scheme is bold and gives them a clear direction in all of their marketing materials.
